Build Selfstorage

Build your own self-storage facility and save money.

The adage "we will expand to fill all available space" creates a demand for self-storage. While there are commercial storage options available, building your own self-storage space allows you to create and construct the sort of design that suits your needs. And, if you can find space in the garage or basement to build your self-storage unit, it also makes it easier to retrieve stored items. For example, when it snows and it is time to get out the ice skates and hockey sticks, they will be easily accessible in your homemade self-storage unit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate a space to build your self-storage unit. As well as the standard garage and basement options, consider installing a spiral staircase to the attic or being creative and using the space under the stairs.

2. Decide on what materials to use when building your self-storage unit. Traditional wood, bricks and concrete are options. Another option is to purchase plastic crates and "build" them into a space in the back of your office, where you can hang a curtain to hide them from view.

3. Assess your skills. If you are handy with a saw, hammer and nails, build your own self-storage. Otherwise, hire a professional carpenter or mason to do the job.

4. Design the self-storage unit. Calculate the available space you have for your project and decide on the materials you will need to build the self-storage unit. If you are in doubt as to what you need to purchase, get a second opinion from someone who is familiar with the trade.

5. Designate a time to build your self-storage unit. If you plan to do it on a weekend, make sure you have enough time to complete the job, as it will save you from tripping over pieces of lumber and tools until the following weekend.
