Straight lines and quaint charm describe the Craftsman style decor.
Emerging as a refreshingly new style of home, the Craftsman home originated during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The exterior was typically one and half stories displaying clean lines, covered front porches and was solidly constructed from natural brick, stone and wood. Clean lines and natural materials were emphasized on the interior. Exposed beams, custom built-ins, wainscoating, plastered walls, stained glass and muted colors characterized the Craftsman style interior. Making the home appear charming, quaint and full of old character imparts the Craftsman style decor. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
Decorating Craftsman Style
1. Incorporate clean, straight lines and simple design of mission style furniture. Created by furniture maker, Gustav Stickley, at the turn of the 20th century, this furniture is simplistic and functional. Crafted of oak, solidly constructed and displaying an earthy, reddish brown color, mission furniture complements the Craftsman style. Place mission style furniture in living, dining and bedroom spaces. Dining tables, chairs, accent tables and headboards thread the Craftsman decor throughout the home.
2. Paint the exterior color in muted colors characteristic of the Craftsman style home. Gray, brown and green in muted shades are authentic paint colors used on original Craftsman homes. Soft blues and purples were additional options. Choose interior paint colors to reflect the warm sunsets and colors reflecting nature. Muted greens, oranges, reds, browns, blacks and yellows evoke the Craftsman style decor.
3. Create a Craftsman style mood with period lighting. Light up a room with a radiant, colorful stained glass lamp. Hand-blown sconces or pendant lights in feather or tulip designs reflect Craftsman lighting. Hammered copper light fixtures or lamps enhance authentic Craftsman decor.
4. Accessorize with antique maps, iron candlestick holders and antique books. Treasured collectibles tucked away in a display cabinet and historic framed blueprints capture the Craftsman style decor. Create a wall arrangement of enlarged and framed vintage postcards, letters and envelopes. Copper house numbers, mailboxes and doorknockers add touches of Craftsman style to your exterior.
