Decorate A Modern Art Deco Room

modern art deco

A modern art deco style can solve a lot of conflicts. You might want to have a modern home, but you don't want it to be so trendy that it goes out of style & you have to redo everything in a few years. A modern art deco home will appeal to a lot of different people, but it's still not something that you see everyday. You can work with the modern elements that you already own to save money. Here is decorate modern art deco. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use sleek wood. Use woods that focus more on rich tones instead of crazy grains. Walnut was a traditional art deco wood, but it can be expensive if you want to use it in modern art deco design. You can use planks of wood & alternate them with steel to create a focal wall in your living room. This way if you want to ditch the art deco at any point, you'll still have a modern room without having to make major changes. Just check your local building codes first because there are usually restrictions on how close wood can be to a fireplace for obvious reasons.

2. Create your own cornice boxes. The art deco period had a lot of faux elements. One of these was to create almost a transom that you'd see over a stage to add drama to windows. This makes for a unique window dressing. For a sleeker look you can just have these go straight across & it will be easier to upholster. However, if you want true art deco design look for that classic stair step pattern.

3. Pick up pedestals. You can use these to delineate the space between your dining room & living room without the hassle of creating a built in. It will give you a modern art deco feeling. You can also place a plant or even a sculpture on top of them. Just make sure that it won't tip over if someone bumps against it.

4. Install crown moldings. This is a bit tricky to do until you get the hang of it. It can add a lot of value to your home when you go to sell & it probably isn't as expensive as you might think. Go for simpler pieces if you want your room to be more modern, & elaborate carved details if you want a more deco feel.

5. Update your sconces. You can do this by installing wood planks or even fabric rectangles behind them to give them more of a presence. This feels like an Old Hollywood hotel, but uses modern shapes. Once again, make sure that it doesn't turn into a fire hazard.

6. Use common materials. Stainless steel, glass & dark woods are used in both modern design & the deco era. This is a fantastic way to update a kitchen without making things seem too cold. You might want stainless steel appliances but you don't want your room to feel like everyone else's in the suburbs. This will fit right in an art deco kitchen while keeping your home unique.

7. Keep the good stuff. You might want to update a vintage art deco home without losing the heart of it. You may even feel like you have to rip everything out & replace it with beige tile. However, if you love your art deco tile, work around it. This way you are true to the period & it will save you a lot of money.

8. Be monochromatic. A modern art deco style can be interesting & soothing at the same time. These rooms often focus on just one color so you don't have to go through the hassle of trying to match tons of different fabric swatches. These colors are often moody, cool, or dark. Just make sure that whatever color you choose won't be overwhelming when you use it en mass.
