Decorate A Small Preteen Girl'S Bedroom With A Loft Bed

Give your preteen a loft bed to free up floor space in her small bedroom.

Secondary bedrooms, where kids, preteens and teenagers typically reside, are generally on the small side, which can create decorating challenges. Utilize a loft bed in a small preteen girl's bedroom to free up floor space without compromising her sleep space. The way you decorate around the loft bed, along with the colors you use, will determine the overall look and feel of the bedroom since that will be the largest piece of furniture in the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint the walls a light shade your preteen enjoys. The color could be a muted pink or bright turquoise, as long as it's a shade she will enjoy. Cooler colors, such as blues and purples, tend to make small rooms appear larger by giving the walls a sense of depth. A funky pattern could be partially hidden behind the loft bed to add some zing behind the bed without taking over the entire room. For example, paint lime green polka dots on a turquoise wall behind the bed while leaving the rest of the room turquoise.

2. Arrange other furniture pieces to maximize floorspace and take up less visual space. Turn the area under the bed into a study, hangout or primping station by placing the appropriate furniture. A futon chair, desk and office chair could provide a study and entertaining area, while a dressing table, chest of drawers and ottoman could create a little dressing room, especially if you add sheer or beaded curtains around the area.

3. Create interest and texture in the room with textiles. Light, flowing fabric will keep the room from feeling even smaller and heavy, such as sheer curtain panels over simple blinds or shades on the windows. Play up the bed with a bright comforter and toss pillows. Add some of the same colors or fabrics under the loft bed or in the form of an area rug for visual continuity.

4. Hang framed pictures, posters, artwork, wall sconces or mirrors on the walls. Brightly colored framed mirrors can add youthful spunk to the room while the mirror reflects light, causing the room to look and feel larger. Floating shelves can hold pictures, organizational baskets or trophies to eliminate the need for a bookshelf. Install a small wall lamp above the bed so she can read in bed.

5. Accessorize the room with a houseplant, lamp, floral arrangements, decorative boxes or baskets to store and organize her belongings. A small floating shelf can have a series of colorful boxes or bins that hold her electronics, makeup, hair accessories or school supplies.
