Decorate A Master Bedroom With Southwestern Style

Southwestern style is a style focused on the southwestern United States with Native American and Mexican appeal. The rough textures, bright colors and handmade objects of southwestern style make it a great decorating theme for a master bedroom. The master bedroom offers a variety of ways to incorporate southwestern style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Think color. The colors of southwest style are vibrant and bold, mirroring the colors of the desert, canyons and sunset of the southwest. Bright, cactus-inspired green, the deep purple found in the sunset, turquoise, bright sun-yellow and clay-orange make up the southwest color rainbow. A bright throw rug laid on the floor, throw pillows to accent the bed or a blanket across a chair liven up the room with southwestern flair.

2. Go natural. Knobby pine is the best suited wood for southwest style decor. Use furniture made of knobby pine or other natural, textured wood. Keep the furniture as un-altered as possible, showcasing the wood's natural beauty.

3. Focus on textiles. Southwestern decor relies heavily on textiles. Furniture upholstery, rugs, bedding and window treatments consist of rough fabrics like that of a Mexican serape. These fabrics have beautiful patterns of stripes or geometric shapes in the bold southwestern style colors.

4. Try traditional figurines. For decoration, use the gecko, a common lizard found in the southwest. Kokopelli is a symbol of fertility commonly used in southwest decorating. Native American or Mexican-inspired figurines fit perfectly with a southwestern theme.

5. Incorporate elements made of clay pottery. Use a small piece of traditional clay pottery for holding small trinkets, or use a bigger one as a planter. Clay pottery gives off the natural essence that southwestern style is famous for.

6. Use plants. Cactus plants are the epitome of the southwest. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Using several different types of cactus plants will add interest to the room. Be careful to put them in areas where they won't get touched inadvertently, since the sharp points of a cactus can hurt.
