Decorate A Dark Room

While you can't necessarily change the light level in your dim room, you can make modifications to the space and adopt a decorating scheme that makes the most of the illumination you have. If you are charged with the task of decorating a cave-like space, consider ways in which you can make this space more inviting and remediate its light deficiency. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a bright pastel to feature as the dominant hue. While white may seem like an obvious color choice for brightening a dark room, in truth, white is often not a good color option. In a dim space, white can appear more as a dingy gray, giving your room a dirty look. Instead, select a rich pastel, such as buttery yellow or peachy pink as these colors will add some warmth and light to your space.

2. Pick light colored furniture. Even if you happen to love your deep brown leather couch, your dark room is not the spot in which to place it. Fill your dim room with furniture with light prints or pastels. As with the walls, it is wise to avoid completely white furniture, as this furniture could appear gray in the low-light.

3. Select light wood over dark. Pick end tables and other wood pieces in bleached wood hues or light oaks instead of overly dominant cherries or other overwhelming deep wood colors.

4. Add spotlights or track lighting to brighten the space. By placing these focusable lights on your room ceiling, you can create dots of light around the room and greatly increase the light in the space. Selecting lighting of this type also allows you to highlight accents in the room, as you can point these lights to paintings or other room accents of which you are particularly fond.

5. Place an assortment of lamps around the room. Lamps are often not just utilitarian, but also aesthetically pleasing. Instead of placing an assortment of statues and other accents around the space, accessorize with lamps, allowing them to do dual duty.

6. Trade a wooden door for a glass door. If a door is the culprit keeping light out of your space, consider replacing this light-blocker with a glass door that will let the light filter into your space.
