Futons typically have a frame and mattress, which can make them difficult items to donate. Some charities will not accept futons at all because they do not accept mattresses. Do not let that discourage you, though, because some charities, including some Goodwill locations, will take both the futon frame and the mattress, as long as they are in good condition. If you make your donation to a charity with tax-exempt status, you can even claim the fair market value of the futon on your taxes.
Instructions
1. Take the mattress off your futon and inspect it to assess its condition. Clean it if necessary. Non-profit organizations usually accept only items that are in good condition.
2. Look for charities in your area by searching on the IRS charities website. All charities listed on the website accept tax-deductible donations. If you already have a charity in mind, search the website to see if it is listed with the IRS.
3. Contact the charities you are interested in to verify that they accept futon donations. For instance, Seattle Goodwill accepts futon frames and gently used futon mattresses, but the Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries in Boston will not accept futon mattresses or frames. You will have the best luck with shelters or organizations that help the homeless, like Housing Works in New York City.
4. Check the fair market value of the futon by visiting used furniture stores, thrift stores, and yard sales. The IRS defines fair market value as the price you would be able to sell the futon for in the current market.
5. Drop off the futon or arrange for it to be picked up if the charity offers a pick-up service.
