Most libraries will happily accept book donations.
Many different non-profit organizations in New York would love to receive book donations from you. You can donate them to your local library, a literacy organization, a school or even a thrift store. Most charities prefer that your books are new or gently used, but it's best to check directly with the organization for donation criteria. Donating used books is a great way to recycle them. You'll be giving them a new home and making readers at a deserving charity very happy.
Instructions
1. Pick the charity you would like to support. The New York Public Library, Reading Reflections, Books Through Bars and Goodwill Industries are just a few of the organizations in New York looking for book donations. You can find more information about their donation policies in the Resources section of this article.
2. Call, visit or check the organization's website to make sure your books meet their donation criteria. They might need to be in a certain condition, appropriate for a certain age group, or relevant to a particular field of study.
3. Transport your books to the donation center. Certain organizations are willing to pick up donations from your house, while others require you to bring them in yourself. The donation center might only be open during certain hours. It's best to call ahead or check the organization's website if you're not sure.
4. Package your books. If you've got a lot of them, pack them in small boxes or bags to make them easier to carry. A hand truck will make it easier to transport multiple boxes of books at once.
5. Drop off your books. Don't forget to ask for a donation slip. A donation slip serves as your proof of donation, and you'll need to have this signed and verified if you're planning on using your donation as a tax write-off.
